Stan Shunpike is the teenage conductor of the Knight Bus, the triple-decker, violently purple emergency transport for stranded witches and wizards. He first appears on the night Harry Potter runs away from the Dursleys after inflating Aunt Marge, flagging down the bus in Magnolia Crescent. Stan is a talkative, pimply-faced young wizard with large, protruding ears, proud of his job and eager to share gossip. He introduces himself with a professional spiel—"Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard just stick out your wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go"—but quickly drops his formal manner when he finds Harry sitting on the ground, asking him, "What were you doin' down there?" and sniggering, "'Choo fall over for?"
Role as Conductor and Informant
Stan's role as conductor involves collecting fares (eleven Sickles to London, with upgrades for hot chocolate, a hot-water bottle, and a toothbrush), assigning beds, and managing passengers.
